8 Simple Things You Can Learn To Do In A Day

Learning is a lifelong adventure. The absence of which has been equated with death. To learn is inevitable. In the sad event that one refuses to learn anything, he/ she will learn it births irrelevance.

Each day unfolds bearing opportunities to learn things: big and small, complex and simple, rare and commonplace. Sadly, as we do life we overlook the small, simple and everyday things. Yes, we look over them to focus on the big, important and consequential things.

Our lives also consist of small things or tasks which when learnt or experienced will give us benefits. The gains may not be far-reaching, but can make life more livable.

A Four-Part Limerick on Life

Knowledge and experiences abound. The problem is our unwillingness and lack of sensitivity or drive to learn.

A few days ago, I learnt a literary (poetry) form called Limerick. Wikipedia, says it is a five-line poem with a strict rhyme scheme. I applied this poetry form to a piece I started four days ago.

Limericks are sometimes obscene with humorous intent. The one I came up with is clean and serious. Here goes.

I love to travel.
To meet people, experience cultures and see sights that dazzle.
But I wish not to sit, in motion, hour after hour,
Covering long distances to places I desire to tour.
Yet to the idea of a trip, I always am agreeable.

How obvious it is, from history –
No good thing comes easy.
Every single battle won,
Not excepting the failed exploits done,
Were wrought by wills bolstered by bravery.

Expect the ugly, the good and bad;
Accept that you’ll be joyful, at other times sad.
Even if you’re a man-about-town,
Beware, life’s pleasures will let you down.
No matter what happens, be glad!

Life’s experiences are always checkered,
Your bread will not always be buttered.
Yet you can live fully, and be fruitful,
Spending yourself mostly on things meaningful,
And leave a legacy that can’t not be remembered.

I am grateful to WordPress’ Blogging U poetry course, Writing 201, where I learnt about Limerick.

I learnt and applied a new poetry form under a day. There are many ways you can improve yourself by learning things. Things so simple you can get the hang of it under a day.
